ঘরের ভাষা

Home language is a wider term than mother tongue, and more honest about how families actually speak. A household may run on Bengali with grandparents, Hindi with a neighbour and English on a screen. A school that treats the home language as an obstacle to be got past teaches a child that part of their life does not belong at school.

Bengali is the root here. It is the language of home, of festivals, of grandparents, and it is never apologised for.
