The 5+3+3+4 structure divides schooling into four stages by what a child of that age can actually do: Foundational (five years, ages 3–8), Preparatory (three years, Classes 3–5), Middle (three years, Classes 6–8) and Secondary (four years, Classes 9–12). The old 10+2 counted only from Class 1 and left the years before it unaccounted for. The new arithmetic starts at three, which is the whole argument in one number.
Arsoum occupies the first five years of that first stage's ground — Pre-Nursery to Upper KG — and hands a child on at six.
