The right age for Nursery, LKG and UKG in 2027: a guide for Hooghly parents
Every year, somewhere in Hooghly, two families with children born eleven days apart end up in different classes, and each is told by a different school that the rule is the rule. Both schools are telling the truth. There is no single national age table that all of them are reading from.
This post explains what actually governs the answer, so that you can work out your own child's position before you start filling forms.
The cut-off date does more work than the birthday
Almost every school in India counts age as on a fixed date, not on the day you apply and not on the day term starts. That date is usually the start of the session.
So the question is never how old is my child? It is how old will my child be on the cut-off date? A child born in late March and a child born in early April can be eleven days apart and a full year apart in class. That is not a mistake; it is what a cut-off is.
Our session begins on 1 April 2027, and every age on this page is counted as on that day.
Arsoum's four bands
We publish ours, so you can check your own child against them without asking anyone:
- Pre-Nursery — two years old, and not yet three, on 1 April 2027
- Nursery — three, and not yet four
- Lower KG — four, and not yet five
- Upper KG — five, and not yet six
There is a date field on the school's own page that will do the arithmetic for you: enter the date of birth on the Which class? finder and it returns the band.
Then a child leaves us at six for a bigger school and Class 1.
Why the school down the road disagrees
Three reasons, all legitimate.
The policy question. NEP 2020 sets Class 1 entry at six, with three Balvatika years before it. But education is on the Concurrent List, and West Bengal published its own State Education Policy in 2023 which retains the state's existing structure rather than adopting NEP's wholesale. A school following the national framing and a school following the state's can land on different ages and both be correct.
Board rules. A school affiliated to a particular board may have its own entry requirement for Class 1 that pushes everything below it up or down by a year.
How many years of pre-primary they run. A school with three pre-primary years and a school with two will take the same four-year-old into differently-named classes. The name on the door is not a measure of anything.
This is why comparing class names across schools is close to useless, and why the only comparison that means something is: what age does this class take, as on what date? Ask it in those words.
When your child is on the line
Some children are born in March, and there is no clever way around it. If your child sits within a few weeks of a cut-off, you have a real decision, and it is worth making it deliberately rather than by default.
Three things are worth weighing, and the child's birthday is the least of them.
Where they are, not how old they are. Readiness is about whether a child can take part in a classroom day: separate from you without falling apart, sit with a group for a while, follow two instructions in a row, manage the toilet, ask an adult for help. It is not about letters or numbers. A child who arrives able to recite the alphabet but unable to ask for help is not the ready one.
The long view, not the near one. A child placed a year up is the youngest in the room at four, which is often survivable, and the youngest in the room at fourteen, which is a different proposition. Being the oldest is rarely a problem at any age. Being the youngest gets harder as the stakes rise.
What you are optimising for. Some families push a child up to finish school a year earlier. It is an understandable instinct and it is worth being honest that it buys a year at twenty-two and spends it at four.
If you are genuinely unsure, say so to the school and ask what they would do. A school that will only discuss this after the fee is paid has answered a different question.
The documents, roughly
Requirements vary, so treat this as a list to prepare rather than a list to trust:
- Birth certificate — the original, and photocopies. This is the one that settles the age question, and no school can waive it.
- Recent photographs of the child.
- A parent's or guardian's photo ID and address proof.
- Immunisation record, if the school asks for one.
- Anything relating to a medical condition, allergy or additional need. Give this early rather than late; it is not a disadvantage, it is information a class of ten can actually act on.
The one thing not to do
Do not adjust the birth certificate. It is not rare and it is not harmless: the date follows a child through board registration, examinations, passports and employment, and the discrepancy surfaces years later at the worst possible moment, usually in front of someone with no discretion to fix it.
If your child is on the wrong side of a line, the right answer is a conversation with the school. There is almost always a version of it that works.
If you want ours checked
Send the date of birth and we will tell you the band, in writing, with no obligation and no visit required. If the answer is that your child is better off waiting a year, we will say that too — a Pre-Nursery seat filled by a child who was not ready for it helps nobody, and there are only ten of them.
