Play-based learning uses play as the vehicle for teaching, not as the reward for finishing the teaching. Some of it is structured: a teacher sets out a task with a concept buried in it. Some of it is free. Both are planned. The distinction that matters to a parent is not whether children are playing — every preschool says children are playing — but whether an adult can tell you what the playing was for.
At Arsoum every activity on the daily plan carries a line saying what it is building. If a teacher cannot write that line, the activity does not go on the plan.
