Why we built Arsoum in Garalgacha — a note from the founders গরলগাছায় আরসুম কেন গড়লাম — প্রতিষ্ঠাতাদের কথা

Garalgacha is not short of schools. Within a few kilometres of Harisava there are branches of two national chains, a number of local centres, and any number of arrangements that a family makes work because they have to. If you have a three-year-old, you are not looking at an empty market. You are looking at a crowded one where almost nothing is written down.

That is the gap this school was built into. Not a gap in supply. A gap in disclosure.

The question that nobody would answer

Ask a preschool how many children are in a class and you will usually get a range, or a reassurance, or a number that turns out to be the number of seats rather than the number of children. Ask what a morning consists of and you will get a brochure with photographs of a smartboard. Ask what the year costs, in total, and you will be told the admission fee, and you will discover the rest of it in instalments over the following eleven months.

None of that is fraud. Most of it is simply how the business has always been done, and the people doing it are not villains. But it puts a parent in the position of having to guess, about the one decision where guessing is least affordable.

We could not find a satisfactory answer to a simple question — what actually happens to my child between nine and half past twelve? — so we decided to build the place that answers it.

What we decided to publish

Six things go out in writing, handed over before you are asked for anything, rather than produced on request:

• The adult-to-child ratio, as numbers. Ten children, one teacher, one assistant. That figure does not move when more admissions come in.
• Every teacher's name and years of experience.
• The complete annual cost on one page, with nothing discovered later.
• The daily schedule, hour by hour, from the portico at 8:45 to pickup.
• The pickup and visitor protocol.
• The refund and withdrawal policy.

Publishing the ratio is the one that costs something. It caps the school. Ten to a class means ten, and the tenth admission is the last one, which is a strange thing for a new business to promise out loud in its first year. We would rather be held to it.

Why the first four years, and only the first four

We do not teach Class 1 and we do not intend to. Arsoum is a foundational school — Pre-Nursery to Upper KG, ages two to six, and then a child leaves us for a bigger school with a bigger field.

This is deliberate, and it is not modesty. A school that runs from Nursery to Class 12 is under a quiet, permanent pressure to make the early years serve the later ones. The three-year-olds get treated as pre-Class-1, the morning gets bent towards what will be tested in eight years' time, and the years that were supposed to be about learning to speak, to wait, to try again, to ask, become years about getting ready. We do not run a waiting room for Class 1.

What a child learns between three and six — that adults can be trusted, that a hard thing can be attempted twice, that their own question is worth asking out loud — is not soft. It is the floor everything later stands on, and a child who misses it spends Class 1 catching up on it instead of learning to read.

Why here

Because this is where we are from, and because the alternative for a family in Garalgacha has been a national template. The chains publish once, for the whole country, and then print the local address on top. Their page for Garalgacha is their page for everywhere. That is a structural fact about how they work, not a criticism of the people who teach in them.

We publish for Garalgacha. When we write about Pujo, it is about pandal-hopping with a three-year-old on these roads. When we write about language, it is about what happens in a Bengali-speaking household that wants its child comfortable in Hindi twenty years from now. We can write that. They structurally cannot.

What we are not claiming

We have not run a session yet. The first one begins in April 2027. We have a building, a published plan, a ratio we have committed to in public, and a founder who has spent nine years in classrooms — seven of them teaching pre-primary children in Gurugram — and who will be here every morning.

What we do not have is a track record, and we are not going to imply one. Anyone who tells you that a school which has not yet opened has proven results is telling you something they cannot know. What we can offer is a standard written down in advance, so that you can hold us to it rather than take our word for it.

Come and look at the building. Read the daily plan. Ask for the fee sheet and check that it is one page. Ask what happens if you withdraw in August. If any answer is vaguer than the ones above, that tells you something — about us as much as about anyone else.
